Northern Sport, Culture & Recreation District

Ski Fit North 2009-2010

Ski Fit North (SFN) is a uniquely northern program.  Excited to launch a new model this year SFN will be focusing on both grass roots and competitive programs.  SFN started in 1989 and we are currently in our 21st season!  SFN is managed by the Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District (NSCRD), guided by a Ski Fit North Steering Committee, and delivered by two fieldworkers: Grass Roots and Competitive.  Annually, over 1200 youth from over 30 communities are involved in the Ski Fit North program in northern Saskatchewan.

Program Goals
  1. To promote healthy lifestyles for northern residents of Saskatchewan through the life-long activity/sport of cross-county skiing.
  2. To motivate students to stay in school by enhancing the school program through the delivery of ski events and programs in northern school and communities.
  3. To promote the development and benefits of community clubs through CCS.
  4. To work with CCS and local clubs to host a ICC/NCCP coaching session in the North.
  5. To continue building high performance development, working in conjunction with CCS and Northern clubs.
  6. To be a knowledge source and support community ski club development.

Long Term Goals (5 years +)

  1. To maintain consistent fieldworkers
  2. To have the fieldworkers trained as learning facilitator for the NCCP/CCS program helping sustain coaches in the North and conduct clinics as necessary.
  3. To expand the development of sustainable Northern clubs.  These clubs will guide further development in skiing beyond the school and fully engaging community so they can function independently and secure needed resources.

Season Completion for 2008-2009

Ski Fit North (SFN) is a uniquely northern program focusing on both grass roots and high performance programs.  SFN started in 1989 and we have completed our 20th year!  SFN is administrated by the Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District (NSCRD) and financed through grants from Cross Country Saskatchewan (CCS) and Sask Sport Inc.  Aboriginal Sport Grant as well as local and provincial sponsorships (Cameco, Areva, Sasktel, LLRIB).

Annually, over 1200 youth from over 30 communities are involved in the Ski Fit North program in northern Saskatchewan.  The Northern Saskatchewan School Championships, for example, held annually in La Ronge, has grown to become one of the largest races in western Canada; skiers from 15 different northern communities attend regularly. The grassroots program remains strong targeting children and youth in beginner level clinics and community/school ski events.  It is a base for the high performanceprogram, which follows the long-term athlete development model and allows youth the opportunity to pursue the sport competitively on a regional, provincial and national level through training camps, coaching development and technical clinics.

Some Highlights from the SFN Program last year were:

  1. At current there are 1224 young skiers that participated in the program.
  2. 243 volunteers – local parents/coaches/teachers.
  3. 15 communities hosted 18 different ski events (loppets, biathlon, races).
  4. Approximately 30 schools participated in 27 communities participated in the program.
