Culture Program Initiatives
The NSCRD works to facilitate and foster the development and delivery of sport, culture, recreation and leadership programs and services which are responsible to and benefit people and communities in the north. Check back often to find information on new and upcoming culture programs.
2008 Northern Spirits Showcase
The Northern Spirits Youth Talent Development Program is made possible by the following three partners: The Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District (NSCRD); Musqua Entertainment (Voices of the North); and Missinipi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).
Over 50 youth from communities throughout northern Saskatchewan participated in a workshop in early spring. Of those participants, 25 talented young people were selected to return to Prince Albert to produce and to perform in the 2nd annual Northern Spirits Showcase.
The Northern Spirits Showcase is a signature event of the Aboriginal Music and Arts Festival. For more information about the Aboriginal Music and Arts Festival, go to www.amaf2008.com
Northern Spirits Art Work
Congratulations to Miriam Körner! Miriam’s artwork, an oil pastel painting titled “Northern Spirits”, showing a group of musicians raising their voice to the sky and attracting their ancestor’s spirits, who join the youth with ancient drums and songs.
There will be several uses of this wonderful painting for the Northern Spirits Showcase. Watch for it!
Thank you to all of the northern artists who submitted their excellent work. We look forward to more opportunities to showcase the talents of northern artists.

Culture Program Ideas
Home Routes is about world-class musicians, known and unknown alike, performing complete concerts in the comfortable intimacy of private homes and other non-traditional spaces. They’re fun to attend, fun to present, and fun to play. A living room serves as a concert hall with 25-40 of the pre-senter’s closest friends and neighbours gathered for an evening of great music. Great artists deliver the same show in a living room that they would present on the main stage of a folk festival or a con-cert hall. Click here for more info.
